Purpose of the STSM: This STSM took place at the Division 1.1 Inorganic Trace Analysis of the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) in Berlin (Germany), under the supervision of the head of Division Dr. Björn Meerman. The research interest of the group is mainly focused on the development of methodologies for single cell (sc) analysis with mass spectrometry (MS) techniques. Several mass spectrometers are available in their facilities, including a last generation inductively coupled plasma time of flight mass spectrometer (ICP-ToF-MS) that allows the simultaneous analysis of target isotopes.
The objective of the STSM was for the grantee to gain the knowledge and expertise to perform ICP-ToF-MS measurements. This technique, in which the host group are experts, is usually employed for the multi elemental analysis and elemental fingerprinting of different environmental and biological samples. This technique can be employed in combination with the applicant’s knowhow (in nanobiotechnology and cell culture handling) for the simultaneous determination of specific biomolecules in individual cells.
